Guide last updated September 24, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area, with at least 2 blank pages, issued within the last 10 years
  • Completed and signed Danish Schengen visa application form
  • One recent biometric photo, 35x45mm, white/light grey background
  • Travel medical insurance covering at least EUR 30,000, valid for the entire Schengen area and full duration of stay
  • Proof of accommodation for every night of the trip (hotel confirmation or Danish host's invitation with residence permit copy)
  • Round-trip flight reservation
  • Bank statements (last 3 months) and payslips/employment letter showing stable income and sufficient travel funds
  • Biometrics captured in person at VFS Global Nairobi (required if you haven't given biometrics for a Schengen visa in the last 5 years)

Visa types

  • Airport Transit Visa (Type A) — for passengers transiting a Danish airport without entering the Schengen zone
  • Short-Stay Schengen Visa (Type C), single/double entry — one or two trips within the visa validity, up to 90 days per 180-day period
  • Short-Stay Schengen Visa (Type C), multiple entry — for frequent business or family travelers with a proven track record, validity can extend to 1-5 years
  • National Visa (Type D) — for stays over 90 days (study, work, family reunification); applied for directly through the Danish Immigration Service (SIRI), not via VFS

How to apply

  • Book an appointment online with VFS Global Nairobi, the Danish Visa Application Centre for Kenya
  • Attend in person to submit your form, passport, and documents, and to give biometrics
  • Pay the visa fee and VFS service fee at the centre
  • Submit no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 calendar days before travel
  • Denmark decides most straightforward tourist applications without an interview; the centre or the Embassy may request additional documents if the file is incomplete
  • Collect your passport in person or opt for VFS's courier return service

Fees & processing time

  • Standard Schengen visa fee: EUR 90 (~KES 12,500) for adults; EUR 45 for children aged 6-12; free under 6
  • VFS Global service fee: approximately KES 4,500-5,500
  • Total estimated cost: roughly KES 17,000-18,000 per adult
  • Standard processing time: 15 calendar days from a complete file
  • Can extend to 30-45 days for cases needing consultation with other Schengen states
  • No official express service is offered for Denmark via VFS Nairobi

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Submit at least a month ahead of travel to leave room for the full 15-45 day processing window
  • Common rejection reasons for Kenyan applicants: unclear purpose of travel, insufficient bank balance relative to trip length, and missing proof of return intent (job, property, family ties)
  • Always apply via VFS Global Nairobi — Denmark does not accept walk-in applications directly at an embassy in Kenya
  • If Denmark is not your main destination on a multi-country Schengen trip, apply at the embassy/VFS of the country where you'll spend the most nights instead
  • Extensions inside Denmark are rare and only granted for documented emergencies; plan your itinerary to fit the approved dates
