What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from date of entry, scanned and uploaded during the online application
  • Digital passport-style photo, recent, white background
  • Completed online visa application via the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal (cancilleria.gov.co)
  • Proof of accommodation and round-trip flight itinerary
  • Bank statements showing sufficient funds for the trip
  • Letter of employment or business registration showing ties to Kenya
  • Biometrics: not required online; may be requested if an in-person interview is called
  • Travel health insurance: recommended, sometimes requested during review

Visa types

  • Visitor visa (V) - Tourism subtype: single or multiple entry, validity up to 1 year with stays of up to 90 days per entry (extendable to 180 days/year), fee approx. USD 50 study fee plus approx. USD 90-120 issuance fee if approved
  • Visitor visa - Business subtype: similar validity, requires an invitation letter from a Colombian company, fees comparable to the tourism subtype
  • Migrant/Resident visas: for longer stays such as work or family reunification, separate application category with its own requirements

How to apply online

  • Register an account on the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs online visa system and select the appropriate Visitor visa subtype
  • Upload all required documents as PDF/JPEG scans and pay the non-refundable study fee (approx. USD 50) to have the application reviewed
  • If the study is favorable, an additional issuance fee (approx. USD 90-120) is charged before the visa is granted
  • Standard processing takes about 5-15 business days from a complete submission, though it can take longer during high-demand periods
  • The approved visa is issued electronically and linked to the passport number - no physical stamp or sticker is required for entry

Fees & processing time

  • Study fee (non-refundable, charged regardless of outcome): approx. USD 50
  • Issuance fee (charged only if approved): approx. USD 90-120 depending on visa subtype and entries
  • No separate VFS/BLS agency fee - the process is handled directly through the Ministry's online portal
  • Standard processing: 5-15 business days; there is no official express lane, so apply well ahead of travel
  • Total cost for most Kenyan tourist applicants: approx. USD 140-170 if approved

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Apply at least 3-4 weeks before travel to allow for the full review period plus any requests for additional documents
  • Common rejection reasons: incomplete financial proof, unclear photos or scans, or inconsistencies between the stated purpose of travel and supporting documents
  • Keep the electronic visa approval confirmation (usually a PDF/QR code) accessible on your phone and printed, since check-in staff will verify it before boarding
  • Colombia has no embassy in Kenya, so all communication and support happens through the online portal or Colombian missions in other countries
  • Double-check passport validity requirements before applying, since an application with less than 6 months' validity will be rejected outright
