Guide last updated September 24, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
  • Proof of onward or return travel
  • Proof of accommodation in Burundi
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory, as both Kenya and Burundi are yellow fever risk countries)
  • Completed arrival form issued at the port of entry

Visa types

  • No visa is required for Kenyan citizens for stays up to 90 days, under East African Community (EAC) reciprocal arrangements between Kenya and Burundi
  • This applies to tourism, business and family visits
  • Work, study or long-term residence require a separate permit applied for through Burundi's Directorate General of Immigration

Entry conditions

  • Kenyan passport holders may enter and stay in Burundi visa-free for up to 90 days
  • A valid passport is required for entry (a national ID card alone is not accepted for Kenya-Burundi crossings outside designated EAC cross-border movement schemes)
  • No paid employment is permitted under visa-free entry
  • Extensions beyond 90 days must be requested from the Directorate General of Immigration in Bujumbura before the visa-free period expires

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee applies for Kenyan citizens entering visa-free
  • No embassy or online application is required for entry
  • Extension of stay fee (if requested): payable locally, processed within a few days at the immigration office
  • No cost beyond standard border formalities

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Carry your yellow fever certificate at all times, as it is checked on arrival given both countries' shared risk status
  • Keep proof of funds and accommodation on hand even though no visa is required
  • Check current regional security advisories before travel, particularly for overland border crossings
  • If staying beyond 90 days or planning to work, begin the residence/work permit process with Burundian immigration well ahead of the deadline
