What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation in Benin
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory, as Kenya and Benin are both yellow fever risk countries)
  • Completed arrival/immigration form issued on entry

Visa types

  • No visa is required for Kenyan citizens for stays up to 90 days under Benin's African-nationals visa exemption policy (in effect since 2021)
  • Travelers wishing to pre-register can still use the e-visa portal at evisa.gouv.bj, though this is optional for Kenyan passport holders
  • Longer stays, work or residence require a separate residence permit applied for after arrival through Beninese immigration authorities

Entry conditions

  • Kenyan passport holders may enter and stay in Benin visa-free for up to 90 days
  • No employment is permitted under this visa-free status
  • Immigration officers at Cadjehoun Airport (Cotonou) or land borders may request proof of onward travel, accommodation and funds
  • Extensions beyond 90 days must be requested from the Directorate of Immigration in Cotonou before the visa-free period expires

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee applies for Kenyan citizens entering visa-free
  • Optional e-visa pre-registration (if chosen): fee approximately EUR 50-73, processed within 48-72 hours
  • No embassy or VFS service fee required since no visa is needed
  • Extension of stay fee (if required): payable locally, varies by duration requested

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Carry your yellow fever certificate at all times, as it is strictly checked on arrival
  • Even though no visa is required, keep printed proof of accommodation and return tickets to avoid questioning at the border
  • If connecting through other West African countries en route, check their separate visa requirements
  • If you intend to stay beyond 90 days or seek work, begin the residence permit process with Beninese immigration well before your visa-free period lapses
