  • Completed Schengen visa application form
  • Two recent biometric passport-style photos
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation) for the full stay
  • Travel medical insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage valid across the Schengen area
  • Proof of sufficient funds and employment/income verification
  • Return/onward flight itinerary
  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) collected in person at the visa application center in Nairobi

Visa types

  • Short-stay Schengen visa (Type C): single, double, or multiple entry, valid for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period
  • Business Schengen visa: requires an invitation letter from an Austrian company
  • National long-stay visa (Type D): for study, work, or family reunification, requires additional documentation specific to the purpose
  • Airport transit visa: only needed for certain nationalities transiting through Austrian airports

How to apply

  • Book an appointment through the Austrian embassy's authorized visa application center (e.g. VFS Global) in Nairobi
  • Submit the completed application with photos, financial proof, insurance, and invitation/hotel booking, along with biometrics
  • Pay the visa fee at the application center
  • Standard processing takes 10-15 working days from the appointment date, though it can extend to 30 days in some cases
  • Collect your passport with the visa sticker once a decision is issued

Fees & processing time

  • Standard Schengen visa fee: EUR 90 (~USD 97) for adults; reduced fee for children aged 6-11
  • VFS/visa center service fee: approximately EUR 25-30 in addition to the visa fee
  • Standard processing: 10-15 working days
  • Extended processing up to 30 days is possible if additional documents are requested
  • Total estimated cost including service fees: roughly USD 130-150

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Apply at least 4-6 weeks before your travel date to allow for standard processing and appointment availability
  • Common rejection reasons include insufficient travel insurance and weak proof of intent to return to Kenya
  • Book your appointment early, as visa application centers can have long wait times during peak travel seasons
  • Ensure your travel itinerary and hotel bookings are confirmed before the appointment, as they are required supporting documents
  • A granted Schengen visa allows travel throughout the Schengen area, not just Austria, within its validity period
