Afghanistan Visa for Kenya Citizens 2026

Visa Required

Kenyan citizens must obtain a visa before traveling to Afghanistan, applying online through evisa.mfa.gov.af or via the Afghan embassy/consulate where available.

Guide last updated September 24, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond intended stay with at least 2 blank pages
  • Completed online visa application via evisa.mfa.gov.af
  • Letter of invitation or purpose-of-travel documentation (business letter, NGO assignment letter, or sponsor letter)
  • Proof of accommodation in Afghanistan
  • Passport-style digital photo (white background) uploaded with the application
  • Biometrics are typically collected on arrival or at an approved visa center, as availability varies by applicant
  • Travel/medical insurance covering Afghanistan is strongly recommended given security conditions

Visa types

  • Tourist visa: single entry, valid for use within 3 months of issue, maximum stay 30 days
  • Business visa: single or multiple entry, requires a sponsoring company letter, maximum stay 30-90 days
  • Official/NGO visa: for personnel of aid organizations or government missions, requires an authorization letter
  • Journalist visa: requires accreditation from the Afghan Ministry of Information

How to apply

  • Apply through the e-visa portal at evisa.mfa.gov.af by creating an account and uploading the required documents
  • Alternatively, apply in person at the nearest Afghan embassy or consulate (check mfa.gov.af for current diplomatic mission locations, as Kenya has no resident Afghan embassy)
  • Submit passport copy, photo, invitation/sponsor letter, and pay the visa fee online or at the mission
  • Standard processing takes 7-15 working days; allow extra time given limited consular capacity
  • No interview is typically required for tourist/business applicants with complete documentation

Fees & processing time

  • Tourist/business single entry visa fee: approximately USD 80-100
  • Multiple entry business visa: approximately USD 150-200
  • No dedicated express service is generally available; standard processing runs 7-15 working days
  • Additional courier/handling fees may apply if using a third-party visa agency due to the absence of a Kenyan-based Afghan mission

Tips for Kenya travelers

  • Apply at least 4-6 weeks in advance given the lack of a resident Afghan embassy in Nairobi
  • Common rejection reasons include incomplete invitation letters and unclear purpose of travel
  • Register your trip with the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and check current travel advisories before departure, as security conditions in Afghanistan change frequently
  • Carry printed copies of your visa approval and invitation letter, as internet access for verification can be unreliable
  • Extensions inside Afghanistan must be arranged through the Ministry of Interior before the visa expires
