United States Visa for Hong Kong Citizens 2026

Visa Required

Hong Kong SAR passport holders need a nonimmigrant visa, typically a B1/B2 visitor visa, applied for through the DS-160 form and an interview at the US Consulate General in Hong Kong.

Guide last updated October 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • HKSAR passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay
  • Completed DS-160 online nonimmigrant visa application form with confirmation page
  • One recent 2x2 inch (51x51mm) photo meeting US visa photo specifications
  • Proof of ties to Hong Kong (employment, property, family) to demonstrate intent to return
  • Evidence of sufficient funds to cover the trip
  • Biometrics (fingerprints) collected at the interview at the US Consulate General Hong Kong & Macau

Visa types

  • B1 Business visa: for conferences, meetings and business negotiations, typically issued for up to 10 years validity with multiple entries, each stay capped by the officer at admission
  • B2 Tourist visa: for tourism, visiting family or medical treatment, usually combined with B1 as B1/B2, same validity pattern
  • F1 Student visa and other work-category visas (H1B, L1, etc.) require a separate petition process and are handled outside the standard B1/B2 track

How to apply

  • Complete the DS-160 form online and pay the MRV application fee
  • Schedule an interview appointment at the US Consulate General in Hong Kong via the official appointment system
  • Attend the interview with your passport, DS-160 confirmation, photo and supporting documents
  • If approved, the visa is affixed as a sticker in your passport, typically within a few business days to about two weeks after the interview

Fees & processing time

  • The standard MRV application fee is USD 185 for most B1/B2 categories, non-refundable regardless of outcome. Interview wait times vary by season (often several weeks to a few months to get an appointment slot), while visa issuance after a successful interview usually takes about 3-7 business days, occasionally longer if administrative processing is required.

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Book your interview appointment as early as possible, since wait times at the Hong Kong consulate fluctuate significantly
  • Bring strong evidence of ties to Hong Kong (employment letter, property, family) - weak ties are a common reason for refusal under Section 214(b)
  • Be concise and consistent in interview answers about the purpose and length of your trip
  • Keep a copy of all submitted documents and the DS-160 confirmation barcode page for your records
