  • Completed visa application form
  • Two recent passport-sized photos (35mm x 45mm, white background)
  • Proof of accommodation and a detailed itinerary
  • Travel health insurance covering the trip
  • Biometrics (fingerprints) are typically collected on arrival at Ashgabat International Airport

Visa types

  • Tourist visa: tied to an LOI from a licensed tour operator, usually valid for the length of the organized itinerary (often 10-20 days), single entry
  • Business visa: sponsored LOI from a Turkmen company, validity set to the business trip, single or double entry
  • Transit visa: for onward travel, typically 3-5 days, single entry
  • Most visas are single-entry and must match the dates on the approved LOI exactly.

How to apply

  • Arrange an LOI through a licensed Turkmen tour operator or your business host, which can take 2-4 weeks to be approved by the State Migration Service
  • Submit the visa application with the LOI either at a Turkmen embassy/consulate or, for tourist visas, collect the visa on arrival at Ashgabat airport once the LOI is confirmed
  • Bring printed copies of the LOI, invitation reference number, photos and passport to the airport or embassy counter
  • Processing is strict and delays are common, so build in buffer time before travel

  • Visa fees commonly range from USD 55-85 depending on visa type and entries, payable in cash (USD) at the airport or embassy; the LOI itself often costs USD 40-100 arranged by the tour operator. Standard processing for the LOI takes 2-4 weeks; airport visa issuance on arrival (once the LOI is approved) takes roughly 1-2 hours.

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Start the LOI process at least a month before travel since Turkmenistan's approval process is slow and inflexible
