Guide last updated October 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Proof of sufficient funds (around SEK 450/day is a common reference, though not strictly enforced for exempt travelers)
  • Travel/health insurance covering the Schengen area (minimum EUR 30,000 coverage recommended)
  • No visa application is currently required; ETIAS online pre-registration will apply once the system goes live across the Schengen area

Visa types

  • Not applicable for short tourist or business visits. Travelers wishing to work, study, or stay longer than 90 days must apply for a Swedish national (D) visa or residence permit through the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) or the Swedish Consulate-General in Hong Kong before travel.

Entry conditions

  • Hong Kong SAR passport holders may enter Sweden and the wider Schengen area visa-free for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period, for tourism, business meetings, or family visits — paid work is not permitted. Border officers may request proof of accommodation, return travel, and funds. The 90-day allowance is shared across all Schengen countries visited in the same period, not per country. Extensions beyond 90 days are rarely granted except in emergencies and require an application to Migrationsverket.

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee applies since entry is visa-exempt
  • Once ETIAS becomes mandatory, a small fee (around EUR 7) with near-instant online approval will apply
  • For a national visa or residence permit, fees are typically around SEK 1,500-2,000 with processing of 1-3 months through Migrationsverket

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Track cumulative Schengen days carefully if visiting multiple EU countries on the same trip
  • Carry proof of return travel and accommodation at the border
  • Register for ETIAS once it becomes mandatory to avoid being denied boarding
  • The Swedish Consulate-General in Hong Kong can assist with longer-stay visa applications
  • Extensions or status changes can only be requested from Migrationsverket inside Sweden
