Hong Kong SAR passport holders can obtain a Rwandan visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport, or apply online in advance - single-entry tourist visa valid 30 days, fee USD 50.

What you need

  • Passport valid at least 6 months beyond the date of arrival
  • A completed arrival visa application (paper form at the airport, or faster online pre-application via the Irembo/migration portal)
  • Confirmed return or onward ticket
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate, required if arriving from, or transiting more than 12 hours through, a country with risk of yellow fever transmission
  • A passport photo for the on-arrival form; applicants who pre-register online upload this digitally instead
  • Travel health insurance recommended but not mandatory

Visa types

  • Visitor/tourist visa on arrival - single entry, valid for a stay of up to 30 days, fee USD 50, payable by card or USD cash at the airport counter
  • East Africa Tourist Visa - a multi-entry option covering Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda, valid 90 days, fee USD 100, but must be applied for in advance online, not available purely on arrival
  • Business visa - similar single-entry 30-day terms, requires an invitation letter from the Rwandan host organization, same USD 50 fee

Visa on arrival

  • At Kigali International Airport or Rwanda's land border posts, present passport, return ticket and, if applicable, yellow fever certificate at the visa-on-arrival counter
  • Pay the USD 50 fee by card or cash; the visa sticker or stamp is issued typically within 10-20 minutes
  • Pre-registering on the Irembo online portal before travel speeds up the airport process significantly and is recommended during peak arrival times

Fees & processing time

  • Visa on arrival fee: USD 50, paid directly at the airport with no separate VFS/service fee
  • Online pre-application (optional but recommended): same USD 50 fee paid in advance, with approval usually issued within 1-3 business days
  • No express/priority option beyond the standard on-arrival process, which is already fast

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Pre-register online via the Irembo portal before departure to avoid queues at the arrival counter, especially useful given limited direct flight options from Hong Kong requiring connections
  • Carry proof of yellow fever vaccination if the itinerary includes a transit through an at-risk country - this is strictly checked and travelers without it can be denied entry or vaccinated on the spot
  • Extensions beyond 30 days can be requested at the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration in Kigali before the visa expires, for an additional fee
