Romania Visa for Hong Kong Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Hong Kong SAR passport holders can enter Romania visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period - no visa required, and since Romania's full Schengen accession this stay counts toward the shared Schengen 90/180 limit.

Guide last updated October 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from Romania/Schengen, issued within the last 10 years
  • No visa required for short tourist or business stays; check the future mandatory ETIAS registration status before booking once it takes effect
  • Evidence of accommodation, return or onward ticket, and sufficient funds (around EUR 50-75/day guideline) should be available on request
  • Travel medical insurance recommended (minimum EUR 30,000 coverage), not usually checked for visa-exempt entrants

Visa types

  • No visa required for stays up to 90/180 days
  • For longer stays, work, or study, a Romanian long-stay (national) visa must be obtained in advance from the Romanian Embassy or Consulate serving Hong Kong (applications are generally routed through Romania's mission in Beijing where Hong Kong lacks a dedicated consulate), fee from approx EUR 120, processing 30-45 days, requiring purpose-specific documents such as a work authorization or university admission letter

Entry conditions

  • Since Romania joined the Schengen area fully, the 90-day visa-free allowance is shared with the rest of the Schengen zone - days spent in Romania count against the overall 90/180-day Schengen limit
  • No employment permitted on the visa-exempt entry
  • Passport is stamped on arrival; officers may ask for proof of return travel and funds

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for visa-exempt short stays
  • National long-stay visa: approx EUR 120, processing 30-45 calendar days including background checks
  • No VFS fee since Romanian consular services for Hong Kong applicants are typically handled directly by the embassy or consulate

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Because Romania now operates inside full Schengen border rules, track total Schengen days carefully if also visiting other EU countries on the same trip
  • Apply for a long-stay visa, if needed, at least 2 months ahead since Romanian consular processing for East Asia applicants can be slower than for neighbouring EU postings
  • Keep boarding passes as proof of entry and exit dates, particularly useful given the shared Schengen counting since full accession
