Portugal Visa for Hong Kong Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Hong Kong SAR passport holders can enter Portugal visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period under the Schengen arrangement - no visa required for tourism or business.

Guide last updated October 25, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid at least 3 months beyond the planned Schengen departure date, issued within the last 10 years
  • No visa currently required; check the status of the EU's future mandatory ETIAS registration (delayed, expected after 2026) before booking
  • Evidence of accommodation, return or onward ticket, and sufficient funds (guideline approx EUR 75/day) should be available if requested by the border officer
  • Schengen travel medical insurance (minimum EUR 30,000 coverage) recommended
  • No advance photo or biometric submission

Visa types

  • No visa required for stays up to 90/180 days
  • For longer stays, work, or study, a Portuguese national visa must be obtained in advance at the Portuguese Consulate General in Hong Kong - categories include Temporary Stay Visa and Residence Visa, requiring purpose-specific documents (employment contract, enrolment letter, D7 passive-income proof, etc.), fee from approx EUR 90, processing 30-60 days given onward referral to Portugal's immigration agency (AIMA)

Entry conditions

  • Passport stamped on arrival; the 90-day allowance is shared across the whole Schengen area, so previous Schengen travel in the same 180-day window counts against it
  • No employment permitted on the visa-exempt entry
  • Officers may ask for proof of the purpose of the trip and return travel

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for visa-exempt entry (future ETIAS fee expected at EUR 7, not yet mandatory)
  • National visa fees for longer stays: approx EUR 90, processing 30-60 calendar days due to residence-permit office involvement

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Track the rolling 90/180-day Schengen limit carefully if combining Portugal with other EU stops
  • Popular Portuguese residence routes (D7, D8 digital nomad visa) draw interest from many Hong Kong applicants - these require the longer national visa process, not visa-free entry, and should be started many months ahead
  • Keep all entry and exit boarding passes in case of a border audit
  • Confirm ETIAS requirements shortly before departure as the EU's start date has shifted multiple times
