Papua New Guinea Visa for Hong Kong Citizens 2026

Hong Kong SAR passport holders need a Papua New Guinea Electronic Travel Authority (eTA) before departure - apply online at eta.immigration.gov.pg; fee around USD 60, processing 3-5 business days.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond intended stay, with at least one blank page
  • No paper form - the eTA application is entirely online
  • No published minimum bank balance, but be ready to show evidence of sufficient funds if asked on arrival
  • Confirmed onward or return flight booking
  • Accommodation booking or invitation letter covering the stay
  • A digital passport-style photo (white background, head and shoulders, taken within the last 6 months)
  • Biometrics: not required for the eTA itself, though fingerprints and a photo may be taken on arrival at Port Moresby Jacksons International Airport under standard immigration procedure
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory but strongly recommended given limited healthcare infrastructure outside Port Moresby

Visa types

  • Tourist eTA - single entry, valid 60 days from approval, permits a stay of up to 60 days, fee approx USD 60
  • Business eTA - single entry, same 60-day validity window, requires a supporting letter from the PNG host company, fee approx USD 100
  • Multiple-entry visas and longer-stay work or student visas are not available as eTAs and must be applied for as sticker visas directly through the PNG High Commission in Canberra, Australia, the nearest mission for Hong Kong applicants

How to apply online

  • Apply at the official eTA portal (eta.immigration.gov.pg)
  • Create an account, enter passport and travel details, upload the passport bio-data page scan and photo
  • Pay the fee by credit or debit card in USD
  • Submit and wait for processing - most approvals arrive within 3-5 business days, though peak periods can take up to 10 business days
  • Approval is emailed as a PDF eTA letter; print or save it and present it with your passport at check-in and on arrival

Fees & processing time

  • Tourist eTA fee: approx USD 60 (around PGK 220), paid online by card - no separate VFS or agency service fee
  • Standard processing: 3-5 business days
  • No official expedited eTA option exists, so apply at least 2 weeks before travel to allow for delays

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Apply 2-3 weeks before departure since the eTA system can experience processing delays
  • Common rejection reasons: a blurry or non-compliant photo upload, a passport with less than 6 months validity, and inconsistent name spelling between the passport and the flight booking
  • There is no PNG consulate in Hong Kong, so all support is via the eTA portal's online helpdesk or email
  • Extensions beyond 60 days must be applied for in person at the PNG Immigration and Citizenship Service Authority office in Port Moresby before the eTA expires
