New Zealand Visa for Hong Kong Citizens 2026

e-Visa / eTA

Hong Kong SAR passport holders need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before flying, applied for online or via the mobile app, costing NZD 17-23 plus the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy of NZD 100.

Guide last updated October 24, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond departure from New Zealand
  • A smartphone (for the NZeTA app) or computer to apply via the Immigration New Zealand website
  • Digital passport photo meeting NZeTA specifications if applying by app
  • Credit/debit card to pay the NZeTA fee and the IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy)
  • Proof of onward/return travel, generally checked by the airline rather than for the NZeTA itself
  • Evidence of sufficient funds may be requested by the airline or border officer
  • Travel and health insurance recommended, not mandatory for the NZeTA
  • No biometrics required for the application; facial image/fingerprints may be captured by eGate or border officers on arrival

Visa types

  • NZeTA (visitor) - linked to passport, valid 2 years or until passport expiry, multiple entry, each stay up to 3 months
  • Standard Visitor Visa - needed instead of NZeTA for stays longer than 3 months or certain purposes, applied through Immigration New Zealand online
  • Work and student visas are separate full-visa categories, not covered by the NZeTA

How to apply online

  • Apply via the NZeTA mobile app (fastest, supports photo capture) or the Immigration New Zealand website
  • Provide passport details, personal information, and answer health/character declaration questions
  • Pay the NZeTA fee (NZD 17 via app, NZD 23 via website) plus the IVL of NZD 100
  • Most NZeTAs are approved within minutes to 72 hours; some are referred for manual review and take longer
  • Approval is linked electronically to your passport - no sticker or paper to print, though a confirmation email is issued
  • Apply at least 72 hours before travel, ideally when booking flights

Fees & processing time

  • NZeTA fee: NZD 17 (mobile app) or NZD 23 (website), roughly USD 10-14
  • IVL (International Visitor Levy): NZD 100, roughly USD 60, paid together with the NZeTA
  • No separate VFS/BLS fee - entirely self-service online/app
  • Total cost estimate: NZD 117-123 (roughly USD 70-74)
  • Standard processing time: most approved within minutes, up to 72 hours
  • No express/priority option; applying early avoids any delay risk

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Apply for the NZeTA as soon as you book flights, since some cases need manual review taking several days
  • Use the official Immigration New Zealand site or app only - third-party sites may overcharge
  • Common issues: mismatched passport details, blurry photo uploads via the app
  • The NZeTA is valid for 2 years for multiple visits, so frequent travellers don't need to reapply each trip
  • For stays beyond 3 months, apply for a Visitor Visa well in advance instead of relying on the NZeTA
