Netherlands Visa for Hong Kong Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Hong Kong SAR passport holders can visit the Netherlands visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period under Schengen short-stay rules, with ETIAS pre-travel authorisation expected to apply once that system becomes mandatory.

Guide last updated October 24, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • No visa required for stays up to 90 days in a 180-day period across the Schengen zone
  • Proof of sufficient funds (around EUR 34-55/day as a general Schengen guideline, or bank statements/credit card)
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Confirmed return or onward ticket
  • Travel health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 strongly recommended
  • No biometrics required for visa-free short stays
  • Once ETIAS becomes mandatory, Hong Kong passport holders will need to apply online in advance (small fee, usually instant to 96-hour approval)

Visa types

  • No visa required for tourism, business meetings, family visits or short study/training up to 90 days
  • Long-stay (over 90 days) purposes - work, study, family reunification - require a Netherlands national visa (MVV) and residence permit, applied for in advance through the Dutch Embassy/Consulate or VFS Global
  • Visa-free business visitors cannot take up paid employment or provide services for hire

Entry conditions

  • Maximum stay: 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen area, not just the Netherlands
  • No work permitted during a visa-free stay
  • Be ready to show proof of purpose of visit, accommodation, return ticket and sufficient funds if asked at the border
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are not generally possible; travellers must leave the Schengen area rather than simply crossing to a non-Schengen country and returning
  • For stays beyond 90 days, apply for the appropriate Dutch visa/residence permit before travelling

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for the 90-day visa-free stay
  • Future ETIAS fee (once mandatory): EUR 7 (free for under-18s and over-70s)
  • No VFS/BLS fee needed for short visa-free visits
  • Total cost estimate: EUR 0-7
  • Processing time: instant entry at the border; ETIAS approval typically arrives within minutes, up to 96 hours if manual review is needed
  • No express option needed since there is no visa to process

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Track your Schengen 90/180-day allowance carefully if combining the Netherlands with other EU trips
  • Carry supporting documents (hotel booking, return flight, bank statements) even though formal checks are rare
  • Once ETIAS launches, apply online well before departure rather than at the airport
  • For transit through Amsterdam Schiphol, confirm whether you need to clear Schengen border control depending on your connecting flight
  • For stays longer than 90 days (study, work), start the MVV/residence permit process with the Dutch mission months in advance
