Guide last updated October 24, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host's address)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the stay
  • Foreigners staying in a private residence rather than a hotel must register with the Mongolian Immigration Agency within 7 days
  • No visa, biometrics, or photo required for visa-free entry
  • Travel insurance recommended given limited medical facilities outside Ulaanbaatar

Visa types

  • No visa category applies for the 14-day visa-free entry. Travellers wishing to stay longer, work, or study must apply for a visa (Tourist, Business, Work, or Student category) in advance via Mongolia's e-visa portal (evisa.mn) or at a Mongolian consulate, each with its own fee and sponsorship requirements.

Entry conditions

  • Hong Kong SAR passport holders may enter and stay in Mongolia visa-free for up to 14 days for tourism or short business trips, with no work permitted on this basis. On arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar or a land border crossing, present your passport and proof of accommodation. There is no extension process for the visa-free 14-day period - travellers needing more time must apply for a visa via evisa.mn before the visa-free period expires, ideally before travel.

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee applies for the visa-free 14-day entry. If a longer-stay e-visa is later required, the fee is typically around USD 53 for a standard tourist visa, with processing through evisa.mn taking around 3-5 business days; express service may be available for an added fee.

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • The 14-day visa-free window is short - plan your itinerary tightly, especially if combining Ulaanbaatar with countryside trips to the Gobi Desert or Lake Khovsgol
  • If staying in a private residence rather than a hotel for more than a week, you or your host must register with the Mongolian Immigration Agency
  • Direct flights from Hong Kong to Ulaanbaatar are limited; most routings connect via Beijing or Seoul - factor this into your 14-day count
  • Carry cash in Mongolian togrog for rural areas, as card acceptance outside Ulaanbaatar is very limited
  • If you anticipate needing more than 14 days, apply for the e-visa before departure rather than relying on an extension, since no extension mechanism exists for visa-free entrants
