Mauritania Visa for Hong Kong Citizens 2026

e-Visa / eTA

Hong Kong SAR passport holders can obtain a Mauritania e-Visa online before departure, or a visa on arrival at Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport, for short tourist or business stays.

Guide last updated October 24, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the entry date, with at least one blank page
  • Completed online e-Visa application with a scanned passport bio page and digital photo
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate, required for travellers arriving from or transiting at-risk countries and recommended for all
  • Evidence of sufficient funds
  • Digital passport photo (white background, 35mm x 45mm) uploaded during the e-Visa application
  • Biometrics (fingerprints) collected on arrival at the airport

Visa types

  • Tourist e-Visa - single entry, valid for 30 days from issue, fee approximately USD 40-50; Business e-Visa - similar validity, requires an invitation letter from a Mauritanian company, fee around USD 50-60; Visa on arrival (classic) - issued at Nouakchott airport for travellers who did not pre-apply online, same 30-day validity, fee around USD 55 paid in cash (EUR or USD accepted).

How to apply online

  • Apply through Mauritania's official e-Visa portal (linked from the Ministry of Interior's e-Visa site). Steps: 1) create an account and fill in personal and travel details; 2) upload a scanned passport bio page and a digital photo; 3) pay the visa fee online by credit card; 4) receive an e-Visa approval PDF by email, typically within 3-5 business days; 5) print the approval and present it with your passport on arrival at Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport, where an entry stamp is issued after a brief biometric check. If the portal is unavailable, the same documents can be presented for a visa on arrival at the airport counter.

Fees & processing time

  • E-Visa fee is approximately USD 40-50 for tourist purposes, paid online by card; visa on arrival costs around USD 55 in cash. Standard e-Visa processing takes 3-5 business days; there is no official expedited service, so applying ahead of travel avoids relying solely on the arrival counter, which can have long queues for cash payment.

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Apply for the e-Visa at least a week before departure to avoid long queues at the visa-on-arrival counter in Nouakchott
  • Carry both a printed copy of your e-Visa approval and backup cash in USD or EUR in case the on-arrival payment system is needed as a fallback
  • Yellow fever certification is strictly checked for travellers connecting through other West and Central African hubs - carry the certificate even if arriving directly from Hong Kong
  • Mauritania has limited banking infrastructure for foreign cards outside Nouakchott, so budget sufficient cash for your trip
  • Business travellers should secure a formal invitation letter well in advance, as it is commonly requested at the airport even with an approved e-Visa
