Guide last updated October 24, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the stay
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Travel insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is recommended, not legally mandatory for visa-exempt travellers
  • No biometrics required for visa-free entry
  • No photo requirement since no visa application is filed

Visa types

  • No visa is required for the visa-exempt 90-day stay. Travellers planning to work, study long-term, or stay beyond 90 days within 180 days must apply for a Schengen long-stay (Type D) national visa or a Malta residence permit through Identity Malta or the nearest Maltese consulate, with categories such as the Single Permit for work, Student visa, and Family reunification visa each requiring sponsor documentation.

Entry conditions

  • Hong Kong SAR passport holders may enter Malta and the wider Schengen area visa-free for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, for tourism, business meetings, or family visits. Employment is not permitted during this stay. On arrival, present your passport, return ticket, and proof of accommodation at passport control at Malta International Airport (Luqa). Overstaying even by a day can result in fines or a future Schengen entry ban, so track your 90/180-day allowance carefully across all Schengen visits - there is no extension mechanism for visa-free stays.

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee applies for the visa-free 90-day entry. If a Type D national visa is later required, fees are typically around EUR 99 for the standard application, processed in 15-30 calendar days through the nearest Maltese consulate or Schengen visa application centre; Hong Kong does not host a Maltese consulate, so applications generally route through Malta's embassy in Beijing.

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Use a Schengen 90/180-day calculator before booking if combining Malta with other EU trips - the limit is shared across the whole Schengen area, not per country
  • Malta's consular services for Hong Kong residents are handled via the Maltese Embassy in Beijing; plan extra lead time for any Malta-specific paperwork
  • Carry proof of return travel and hotel bookings even though visa-exempt, since border agents do check documentation on busy summer flights
  • Travel insurance with Schengen-compliant medical coverage is wise given Malta's cost of private healthcare for visitors
  • If planning to study or work, start the Type D visa process at least 2-3 months ahead, as Identity Malta processes residence permits separately after arrival
