Visa Free

Hong Kong SAR passport holders are visa-exempt for Italy and the wider Schengen Area, and may stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism or business.

Guide last updated October 24, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen Area
  • Passport issued within the last 10 years
  • Confirmed return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation for the stay
  • Evidence of sufficient funds (commonly suggested around EUR 50 per day, though rarely checked for Hong Kong travellers)
  • Travel medical insurance covering at least EUR 30,000, strongly recommended and sometimes requested at the border
  • No biometrics are collected on entry under the current visa-free regime

Visa types

  • Visa-exempt short stay - tourism or business, up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area, free of charge
  • Schengen Type C visa - only required for nationalities outside the exemption list, not applicable to Hong Kong SAR passport holders for short stays
  • National (Type D) visa - needed only for stays beyond 90 days, study, or work, applied for through the Italian consulate (vistoperitalia.esteri.it)

Entry conditions

  • Hong Kong SAR passport holders can enter Italy and travel freely within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period
  • Time spent in any other Schengen country counts towards the same 90-day limit
  • No work is permitted under the visa-free entry; business meetings and conferences are allowed
  • Once the EU brings it into force, travellers will also need to register for ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) online before each trip, in addition to the existing visa exemption
  • Overstaying can result in fines and an entry ban across the Schengen Area

Fees & processing time

  • Visa-exempt entry: free, processed at the border on arrival, generally a few minutes
  • No visa application or processing time applies for stays under 90 days
  • ETIAS, once in force, is expected to cost around EUR 7 and be approved within minutes to a few days
  • National (Type D) visa applications through vistoperitalia.esteri.it typically take 15-30 calendar days

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Track your Schengen days carefully if you visit multiple European countries on the same trip, since the 90/180 limit is shared across the whole area
  • Keep your passport entry/exit stamps and boarding passes in case you need to prove your dates of travel
  • Register in advance for ETIAS once it becomes mandatory, well before booking non-refundable flights
  • Carry proof of travel insurance and accommodation, as Italian border officers occasionally ask for these documents
  • If travelling for a long study or work placement, apply for the correct national visa in Hong Kong well in advance, as the visa-free entry cannot be converted locally
