Ireland Visa for Hong Kong Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Hong Kong SAR passport holders are visa-exempt for Ireland and may stay up to 90 days for tourism or business, though Ireland is outside the Schengen Area and has its own separate entry stamp.

Guide last updated October 24, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the full intended duration of stay in Ireland
  • Confirmed return or onward travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host's address)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the stay
  • No visa application form is required for the visa-exempt entry
  • No biometrics are collected on arrival for a visa-free short stay
  • Travel/medical insurance is strongly recommended, as Ireland's public healthcare is not free for short-term visitors

Visa types

  • Visa-exempt short stay - tourism or business, up to 90 days, free of charge, no application needed
  • Irish Short Stay Visa (C visa) - only required for nationalities not on the exemption list, not applicable to Hong Kong SAR passport holders
  • Irish Short Stay Visa Waiver Programme - allows travel to Ireland with a valid UK visa for certain nationalities, not generally needed by Hong Kong SAR passport holders, who are already visa-exempt

Entry conditions

  • Hong Kong SAR passport holders may enter Ireland without a visa and stay for up to 90 days in a 180-day period, for tourism, business meetings, or family visits
  • Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area or the Schengen 90/180 day count - a separate Irish immigration stamp is issued on entry
  • No employment or study beyond 90 days is permitted under this visa-free entry
  • An immigration officer may ask for proof of return travel, funds, and accommodation at the border
  • Overstaying is treated as an immigration offence and can affect future travel to Ireland and the UK

Fees & processing time

  • Visa-exempt entry: free, processed at the immigration desk on arrival, typically a few minutes
  • No application or processing time applies since no visa is required
  • If a longer-stay or study/work visa is later needed, applications are made through the Irish Immigration Service Delivery (irishimmigration.ie) with processing times varying by visa type (commonly 4-8 weeks)

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Carry proof of onward travel since many Hong Kong travellers combine Ireland with a UK trip under the Common Travel Area
  • Keep hotel bookings and a rough itinerary on hand, as Irish immigration officers sometimes ask questions at the border despite the visa exemption
  • Remember that time spent in Ireland does not count against your Schengen 90/180-day allowance, and vice versa
  • Purchase travel insurance before departure, as Ireland's public healthcare is not free for short-term visitors
  • If you plan to continue to Great Britain, note the Common Travel Area allows free movement between Ireland and the UK without further checks for most travellers
