Hong Kong SAR passport holders can enter Iran visa-free for tourism for up to 21 days under Iran's unilateral visa-exemption scheme, provided they arrive with proof of onward travel and accommodation.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry
  • Confirmed onward/return ticket
  • Proof of hotel booking or an invitation letter if staying with a host
  • Travel health/medical insurance valid in Iran, required and may be checked on arrival
  • No visa application form needed for the visa-free entry
  • No biometrics collected for the 21-day exemption, though photographs may be taken at some ports
  • Entry only permitted through designated international airports (not all land borders accept the visa-free stamp)

Visa types

  • Visa-free entry - single entry, tourism only, 21 days, free of charge, not extendable
  • Tourist e-Visa (via e_visa.mfa.ir) - single entry, up to 30 days, fee around USD 30-50 depending on nationality group, used if a longer or more flexible stay is needed
  • Tourist visa through an embassy or registered tour operator - for group tours or longer independent travel

Entry conditions

  • The 21-day visa-free stamp is for tourism only; business, work, journalism, or study require a separate visa obtained in advance
  • The exemption cannot be extended inside Iran - travellers needing more time should apply for the regular tourist e-Visa instead before departure
  • Entry is recorded electronically; carry proof of your accommodation for each city visited
  • Mandatory travel insurance is sometimes verified at the airport, so buy a policy that explicitly covers Iran before departure

Fees & processing time

  • Visa-free entry: free, processed at the immigration counter on arrival, typically a few minutes
  • Tourist e-Visa: fee approximately USD 30-50 (varies by nationality group), online application at e_visa.mfa.ir, standard processing 3-10 working days
  • No same-day/express option is offered for the e-Visa; apply at least 2 weeks before travel to allow for delays

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Arrive at a designated international airport (e.g. Imam Khomeini International in Tehran) - some smaller ports do not process the visa-free stamp
  • Carry a printed hotel confirmation or host invitation for each city on your itinerary, as it may be requested during the trip
  • Purchase travel insurance that explicitly lists Iran as covered territory to avoid issues at check-in
  • Be aware that currency exchange and card payments are restricted in Iran due to sanctions - carry sufficient cash (USD or EUR) for the entire trip
  • If your itinerary may exceed 21 days, apply for the tourist e-Visa in advance rather than relying on the visa-free entry
