What you need

  • Passport valid at least 6 months beyond arrival with 2 blank pages
  • Recent digital passport-style photo (white background) for online upload, or a physical photo for a sticker visa
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Business invitation/cover letter for business visa applications
  • No mandatory vaccination certificate unless arriving from a yellow-fever endemic country

Visa types

  • e-Tourist visa: 30-day, 1-year, or 5-year validity options, fee USD 10-80
  • e-Business visa: 1-year multiple entry, fee approx USD 80, requires a business invitation
  • Regular (sticker) visas: tourist, business, employment, student, and other categories issued by the Consulate General of India in Hong Kong for cases not covered by e-Visa

How to apply

  • For most short tourist or business trips, apply online through the official Indian e-Visa portal, uploading the passport bio page and photo and paying the fee by card
  • Approval (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is usually emailed within 3-5 working days; print it and carry it with the passport for immigration clearance on arrival
  • For categories not eligible for e-Visa (e.g. long-term employment or journalist visas), apply in person at the Consulate General of India, Hong Kong, with the completed form, photo, and supporting documents

Fees & processing time

  • e-Tourist visa fee: approx USD 10 (30-day) to USD 80 (5-year multiple entry)
  • e-Business visa fee: approx USD 80
  • Regular sticker visa fee: typically USD 50-120 plus a consular service fee
  • Standard e-Visa processing: 3-5 working days (some approvals arrive within 24-72 hours)
  • Regular visa processing at the consulate: typically 5-7 working days

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Apply for the e-Visa at least 4 calendar days before travel, as required by India's e-Visa rules
  • Use the official portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in) to avoid third-party sites charging extra fees
  • Common rejection reasons: photo not meeting specifications, passport with insufficient validity
  • The e-Visa is not extendable — a fresh regular visa application is needed for longer or repeat stays
  • Confirm current requirements at mea.gov.in before applying, as eligible ports of entry are periodically updated
