Guide last updated October 24, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • HKSAR passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area
  • Proof of sufficient funds (approx EUR 45/day recommended; bank statement or credit card)
  • Confirmed return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host's address)
  • Travel/health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is strongly recommended for Schengen travel
  • No visa application form or biometrics required for the visa-free entry

Visa types

  • No visa required for short tourist, business, or transit stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period
  • For stays beyond 90 days, work, or study, a national (sticker) visa or residence permit from the German Consulate General in Hong Kong is required before travel

Entry conditions

  • Allowed stay: 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area, not per country
  • No employment permitted during the visa-free stay
  • Be ready to show return ticket, accommodation proof, and funds if asked at the border
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are not normally possible from inside Germany/Schengen without a valid long-stay visa

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for visa-free entry
  • If a long-stay (sticker) visa is required instead: fee approx EUR 75-100, processed in 15-30 working days via the German Consulate General in Hong Kong
  • No agency fee for short-stay visa-free travel

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Track days carefully across all Schengen countries visited within the 180-day window
  • ETIAS pre-travel authorisation is being phased in for visa-exempt Schengen travellers — check etias.com before departure in case it applies to your trip
  • Keep hotel bookings and return tickets accessible, as border officers do ask visa-exempt travellers for these
  • Arrange Schengen-compliant travel insurance before departure
  • For trips needing more than 90 days or involving paid work, apply for the correct visa at the German Consulate General in Hong Kong well in advance
