Guide last updated October 24, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen Area, issued within the last 10 years
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Proof of sufficient funds, generally around EUR 50-100 per day of stay as a guideline
  • Travel health/medical insurance covering at least EUR 30,000, recommended
  • No application form required in advance; ETIAS pre-travel authorization will eventually apply once fully implemented across the Schengen Area

Visa types

  • No visa required for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen Area
  • Longer stays, study, or work require a national visa or residence permit applied for through france-visas.gouv.fr or a French consulate before travel
  • Note that French overseas territories (e.g. French Polynesia, New Caledonia) can have separate entry rules

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, visa-free, across the Schengen Area
  • Present passport at the border for an entry stamp; days are tracked against the 90/180 rule
  • Paid employment is not permitted under the visa-free allowance
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are only granted in exceptional circumstances through the local préfecture

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for the 90-day visa-free entry
  • No processing time required for entry
  • Once ETIAS becomes mandatory, the authorization fee is expected to be EUR 7, with near-instant to 96-hour processing

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Track cumulative Schengen days across all Schengen countries visited on the same trip, not just France
  • Carry proof of accommodation and return tickets, since Charles de Gaulle and Orly immigration can request them
  • Check france-visas.gouv.fr and diplomatie.gouv.fr for the latest entry requirement updates before departure
  • If visiting French overseas territories, verify entry rules separately as they may differ from mainland Schengen rules
  • Keep digital and printed copies of hotel bookings for border control
