What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay
  • Scanned passport bio-data page and digital passport photo for the online application
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host address)
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds (bank statement or credit card)
  • Travel health insurance: recommended, not mandatory
  • Biometrics: photo and fingerprints taken on arrival at the airport

Visa types

  • Tourist e-Visa: single entry, valid 90 days from issue, max stay 90 days, fee approximately USD 10
  • Business e-Visa: similar validity, requires an invitation letter from a Salvadoran company, fee approximately USD 10-30
  • CA-4 regional coverage: once stamped, generally permits travel between El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua without a new visa on the same trip

How to apply online

  • Apply via the official e-visa portal linked from El Salvador's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (rree.gob.sv)
  • Complete the online form with passport and travel details and upload required documents
  • Pay the processing fee online by credit card (around USD 10 for tourist category)
  • Approval is sent by email as a PDF, typically within 3-5 business days; print it for arrival
  • At the airport, immigration checks the printed e-Visa approval alongside the passport and stamps entry

Fees & processing time

  • Tourist e-Visa fee: approximately USD 10
  • Business e-Visa fee: approximately USD 10-30 depending on category
  • No separate VFS/BLS agency fee, since the application is direct through the government portal
  • Standard processing time: 3-5 business days
  • No official expedited option; apply early to avoid delays

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Apply one to two weeks before departure to leave buffer time for processing
  • Common rejection reasons: mismatched personal details between passport and application form, or low-resolution scans
  • There is no Salvadoran embassy in Hong Kong; applications and enquiries are handled online or through the consulate in mainland China
  • Keep digital and printed copies of your e-Visa approval, since it may be checked again at CA-4 border crossings
  • If continuing to Guatemala, Honduras, or Nicaragua, note this in the application so the CA-4 coverage is clear on your approval
