  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)

  • Business visa on arrival: single entry, valid 31 days, approximately USD 90, requires an invitation letter from a Djiboutian company
  • e-Visa: same categories and validity as above, applied for online before travel

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Djibouti-Ambouli International Airport and major land border crossings
  • Go to the visa counter before the main immigration queue; present passport, return ticket, and accommodation proof
  • Pay the fee in cash (USD preferred, Djiboutian francs also accepted)
  • Fingerprints and a photo are taken; the visa is issued within 15-30 minutes
  • Alternatively, apply for the e-Visa in advance to get a printed approval emailed within 48-72 hours and skip most of the counter wait
  • Tip: carry exact USD cash in small denominations, as change is not always available

Fees & processing time

  • Visa on arrival fee: approximately USD 50 (tourist), USD 90 (business), payable in cash
  • e-Visa fee: approximately USD 60-70 including the online processing surcharge, paid by card
  • No separate VFS/BLS agency fee for the on-arrival route
  • Standard processing time: 15-30 minutes at the airport counter; e-Visa typically 48-72 hours
  • No official express counter; same-day issuance is standard for visa on arrival

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Apply for the e-Visa online 3-5 days before departure to avoid queues at Djibouti-Ambouli Airport
  • Common delays: missing return ticket or accommodation proof, or insufficient passport validity
  • Carry a printed copy of your e-Visa approval and accommodation booking even on the on-arrival route
  • Check current entry advisories, as rules can tighten due to regional security conditions
  • Extensions beyond 31 days are handled by the Direction de la Sécurité Publique in Djibouti City before expiry
