China Visa for Hong Kong Citizens 2026

Visa Free

Chinese-national Hong Kong permanent residents travel to mainland China visa-free using the Home Return Permit (回鄉證); other HKSAR passport holders without a Home Return Permit need an ordinary Chinese visa.

Guide last updated October 23, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • For Chinese-national HK residents: a valid Home Return Permit (HRP / 回鄉證), renewable every 10 years for adults (5 years for those aged 17 and under) - no additional visa needed
  • For non-Chinese-national HKSAR passport holders: a valid HKSAR passport with at least 6 months validity, a completed China visa application form, a recent passport photo, and usually an invitation letter or hotel booking
  • Proof of return/onward travel
  • No biometrics for HRP holders; visa applicants may apply via the China Visa Application Service Centre in Hong Kong

Visa types

  • Home Return Permit (HRP) - not a visa, a multi-entry travel document for Chinese-national HK residents, valid 10 years for adults
  • L (tourist) visa - for non-HRP holders, single or multiple entry, validity 3 months to 10 years depending on reciprocity, stay up to 30-90 days per entry
  • M (business) visa - similar structure to the L visa, requires a business invitation

Entry conditions

  • HRP holders can enter and stay in mainland China without a tourism-specific day limit, though hotel/public security registration within 24 hours may apply
  • L-visa holders are limited to the stay duration printed on the visa, typically 30 days per entry, extendable at local Public Security Bureaus for a fee
  • No work permitted without the appropriate work visa/permit

Fees & processing time

  • HRP renewal fee: approximately HKD 230, processed in about 10 working days (express service available for an extra fee, 3-5 days)
  • L/M visa fees for non-HRP holders: approximately HKD 400-900 depending on entries and nationality reciprocity
  • Standard visa processing: 4 working days, with rush service available for an extra fee at the Visa Application Service Centre

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Renew your Home Return Permit well before expiry, allowing at least 2-3 weeks during peak periods
  • If traveling with a non-Chinese-national family member on an HKSAR passport, confirm their visa requirement separately, since they cannot use an HRP
  • Register with local police/hotel when required during stays in mainland cities
  • Keep both your HKSAR passport and HRP valid and consistent, as discrepancies can cause border delays
  • Check for any temporary e-channel or health declaration requirements before travel
