What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival, with at least one blank page
  • No visa application for visa-free entry
  • Proof of onward/return ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel or lodge booking)
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the stay (cash, cards or bank statements), may be requested at the border
  • Yellow fever certificate required only if arriving from or transiting a country with risk of yellow fever transmission
  • No photo or biometrics required for visa-free entry

Visa types

  • Visa-free tourist/business entry - up to 90 days, no application needed
  • Work/study/residence permits - required for employment, study or long-term residence, applied for through Botswana's Department of Immigration with a local sponsor

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days per visit for tourism or short business trips (attending meetings, not taking up local employment)
  • No employment is permitted on visa-free entry
  • Entry stamp is issued on arrival at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (Gaborone) or any official land border post
  • Extensions beyond 90 days require an application at an Immigration office in Gaborone or another major town before the current stay expires

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the 90-day visa-free entry
  • Extension of stay, if granted, carries a nominal administrative fee set by the Department of Immigration
  • Park and reserve entry fees for destinations like Chobe or the Okavango Delta are separate from immigration requirements

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Carry proof of accommodation for safari lodges, as these are sometimes checked alongside immigration documents
  • Keep some cash available, as remote border posts may have limited card payment facilities for incidental fees
  • Plan safari logistics (internal flights, lodge transfers) in advance, as travel between regions can take longer than expected
  • Apply for any extension before your 90-day stamp expires, at an Immigration office rather than waiting until the last day
