Bhutan Visa for Hong Kong Citizens 2026

e-Visa / eTA

Hong Kong SAR passport holders need an online visa clearance before travelling to Bhutan, arranged through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or hotel together with payment of the mandatory Sustainable Development Fee.

Guide last updated October 23, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry
  • Online visa application submitted through the Department of Immigration's e-visa system, typically facilitated by your tour operator or booked hotel
  • Digital passport-style photo (white background, taken within the last 6 months)
  • Confirmed accommodation booking for the full length of stay
  • Confirmed flight booking on Drukair or Bhutan Airlines (the only carriers serving Paro) or entry details if arriving overland from India
  • Travel/medical insurance is strongly recommended given the mountainous terrain
  • No biometrics are collected in advance; your visa clearance letter and passport are checked on arrival at Paro

Visa types

  • Tourist e-visa - single entry, validity matched to your confirmed travel dates, for leisure visits
  • Business visa - for conferences, meetings or official business, requires a local sponsoring entity
  • Diplomatic/official visas - for government business, arranged through official channels, not applicable to most travellers

How to apply online

  • Book your trip through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or a hotel registered with the Department of Immigration - they submit your e-visa application on your behalf
  • Upload your passport bio page and digital photo, and confirm your itinerary and accommodation
  • Pay the visa fee of USD 40 plus the Sustainable Development Fee of USD 100 per person per night (reduced rates apply for children aged 6-12; the discounted SDF rate is reserved for South Asian nationals and does not apply to Hong Kong SAR passport holders)
  • Processing typically takes 5-7 business days; the approved visa clearance is emailed as a printable document
  • Present the printed visa clearance and passport at Paro International Airport (or the Bhutan-India land border) to receive the visa stamp

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: USD 40 (one-time, non-refundable)
  • Sustainable Development Fee: USD 100 per adult per night (children 6-12 pay USD 50/night, under 6 exempt)
  • Total cost scales with trip length - e.g. a 5-night trip costs roughly USD 540 in SDF and visa fees before flights, tours and hotels
  • Standard processing: 5-7 business days; no formal express service is offered
  • Payment is made online by card during the application

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Book your tour operator or hotel and start the e-visa process at least 2-3 weeks before travel to allow processing time
  • Bring a printed copy of your visa clearance letter in addition to having it on your phone
  • Factor the nightly Sustainable Development Fee into your overall trip budget - it applies for every night of your stay, not just touring days
  • Direct flights from Hong Kong are not available; most itineraries connect via Bangkok, Kathmandu, Delhi or Singapore on Drukair/Bhutan Airlines
  • Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly advised given Bhutan's remote, high-altitude terrain
