Guide last updated October 23, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of your stay (6 months validity recommended)
  • No visa or application form needed for the initial 30-day entry
  • Proof of onward or return travel
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host address)
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover the stay, occasionally requested by immigration officers
  • No photo or biometrics required at entry; standard passport photos are only needed if later applying for an extension
  • Travel insurance is recommended but not mandatory

Visa types

  • Visa-free tourist entry - 30 days on arrival, no application required
  • Extension of stay (not a visa) - granted in monthly blocks by the Immigration and Nationality Department, up to a maximum of 6 months in a calendar year
  • Work/residency permits - separate applications required for employment or long-term residence, sponsored by a local employer or through the Qualified Retired Persons programme

Entry conditions

  • Initial stay of 30 days granted on arrival, stamped in the passport
  • Extendable monthly at any Immigration office (including Belize City, San Pedro, San Ignacio) up to a total of 6 months per year
  • No employment permitted without a separate work permit
  • An exit/departure fee (commonly bundled into airline tickets as the Protected Areas Conservation Trust fee plus departure tax, together roughly USD 35-40) applies when leaving by air

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the initial 30-day visa-free entry
  • Extension fee: approximately BZD 100 (about USD 50) per month, payable in cash at the Immigration office, processed same-day
  • Departure taxes/fees when flying out total roughly USD 35-40, usually included in the airline ticket price
  • No express service needed as extensions are processed on the spot

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Keep a close eye on your 30-day stamp date and visit an Immigration office before it expires if you want to extend, rather than overstaying
  • Belize dollars are pegged to the US dollar at 2:1, and USD cash is widely accepted, useful for paying extension fees
  • Carry proof of onward travel even on short trips, as officers may ask for it at the airport
  • For stays beyond 6 months, you must leave the country and re-enter, or pursue a different residency category
