Belgium Visa for Hong Kong Citizens 2026

Hong Kong SAR passport holders can travel to Belgium visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period under the Schengen short-stay exemption, and will additionally need an ETIAS travel authorisation once it becomes mandatory.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area, issued within the last 10 years
  • No visa or application form for short stays - only an ETIAS travel authorisation once the EU's ETIAS system becomes mandatory (rollout expected from late 2026)
  • Proof of funds for the stay - Belgium's guideline is approximately EUR 95 per day, or a sponsor's invitation/undertaking
  • Return or onward ticket and proof of accommodation (hotel booking or host's invitation letter)
  • Travel/medical insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is recommended, though not formally checked for visa-exempt travellers
  • No biometrics are collected for visa-free Schengen entry beyond the EU's Entry/Exit System facial and fingerprint registration being phased in at the border for all travellers

Visa types

  • Visa-free short-stay entry (tourism, business meetings, family visits) - up to 90 days per 180-day period across the whole Schengen area, no application needed
  • National Type D visa (long-stay) - required for stays over 90 days, study, work or family reunification; issued by the Belgian Embassy/Consulate serving Hong Kong, validity matches the purpose (e.g. 1 year renewable for students)
  • Schengen Type C visa - not required for Hong Kong SAR passport holders for short stays

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, counted across all Schengen countries combined, not per country
  • No employment is allowed on the visa-free entry
  • Must be able to show a return/onward ticket, accommodation details and sufficient funds if asked by border officers
  • Once ETIAS is mandatory, authorisation must be obtained online before boarding (processing is usually instant, up to 96 hours in some cases)
  • Extensions beyond 90 days are not possible from within Belgium under the visa-free scheme

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the 90-day visa-free entry itself
  • ETIAS authorisation fee: EUR 7 (free for applicants under 18 or over 70), valid for 3 years or until passport expiry, approval is typically instant to 96 hours
  • National Type D visa: fee approximately EUR 180, processed via VFS Global Hong Kong on behalf of the Belgian Consulate, standard processing 15-30 calendar days
  • No separate service fee for visa-free travel

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Apply for ETIAS at least a few days before departure once it is live - airlines will deny boarding without a valid authorisation
  • Remember the 90/180-day Schengen limit applies cumulatively across all Schengen states, not just Belgium, so track previous Schengen trips carefully
  • Keep digital and printed copies of hotel bookings and return flights in case of border questioning
  • For any stay intended to exceed 90 days (study, work, long family visits), apply for the national visa well in advance through VFS Global in Hong Kong, as processing can take a month
