Hong Kong SAR passport holders can enter Austria and the Schengen Area visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen Area
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Proof of accommodation for the stay in Austria/Schengen
  • Proof of sufficient funds (guideline of around EUR 100 per day is commonly used by Austrian border officers)
  • Travel health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 is strongly recommended and may be requested at the border
  • No visa or biometrics required within the 90-day visa-free allowance
  • ETIAS pre-travel authorisation will additionally be required for visa-exempt Schengen visitors once the system enters into force

  • Entry processing at the border is typically a few minutes with standard passport checks

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Track the 90/180-day Schengen limit carefully if visiting multiple Schengen countries on the same trip or across the year
  • Carry proof of travel health insurance, as it is one of the more commonly requested documents at Austrian border checks
  • Once ETIAS becomes mandatory, apply online before departure - it is a lightweight screening, not a visa
  • Only longer stays require contacting the Austrian Embassy in Hong Kong; short tourist or business trips need no advance application
  • Keep boarding passes and hotel confirmations until departure from the Schengen Area in case of an exit check
