Australia Visa for Hong Kong Citizens 2026

HKSAR passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601) for Australia, applied for online via the Australian ETA app; fee AUD 20, usually approved within minutes to 24 hours.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the intended travel period (HKSAR passport eligible for the ETA)
  • Smartphone with the Australian ETA app, or application via a registered travel agent
  • Digital passport-style photo is not required for the app-based ETA (facial image captured via app in some flows)
  • Confirmed travel details are not mandatory at application but recommended to have on hand
  • No biometrics appointment required; application done entirely online via the app
  • Travel/health insurance recommended, not mandatory for short stays

Visa types

  • ETA (subclass 601): multiple entry, valid 1 year or until passport expiry (whichever earlier), each stay up to 3 months, fee AUD 20
  • eVisitor (subclass 651): not available to HKSAR passport holders (reserved for EU/EEA passports)
  • Visitor visa (subclass 600): alternative for longer stays or if ETA is not granted, fee from AUD 150, processed in 2-4 weeks

How to apply online

  • Download the Australian ETA app (iOS/Android) or use a registered agent if you don't have a compatible device
  • Create an account, scan your passport using the app, and submit answers to health/character questions
  • Pay the AUD 20 service fee by credit/debit card within the app
  • Most applications are approved within minutes; some are referred for manual processing taking up to a few days
  • No physical visa label is issued - the ETA is electronically linked to your passport number

Tips for Hong Kong travelers

  • Apply at least a few days before travel in case your application is referred for manual review
  • Ensure your passport details are entered exactly as printed to avoid processing delays
  • Common issues: mismatched passport number/expiry entry, or a previous visa refusal elsewhere triggering manual review
  • The ETA is tied to your passport - if you renew your passport, you need a new ETA
  • For stays over 3 months or for other purposes (study, work), apply for the relevant substantive visa well in advance instead of relying on the ETA
