What you need

  • A valid German e-passport with a biometric chip

  • No biometrics submitted in advance; fingerprints and a photo are taken by CBP on arrival

  • ESTA under the Visa Waiver Program: tourism or business, up to 90 days per visit, no extensions or change of status permitted
  • B-1/B-2 visitor visa: for stays over 90 days or purposes not covered by the VWP, requires a DS-160 form and an embassy interview
  • F-1 student and H-1B work visas: separate sponsored applications through the US embassy in Berlin or consulates in Frankfurt and Munich

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Apply as soon as travel is planned rather than at the last minute
  • Older non-biometric German passports are not eligible for ESTA
  • Common rejection reasons include previous visa refusals or travel to Iran, Iraq, Syria or North Korea after 2011, which requires a full B-1/B-2 visa instead
  • CBP officers at the port of entry make the final admission decision even with an approved ESTA
  • Working in the US is not permitted on ESTA/VWP status
