What you need

Visa types

  • Visa-free entry: free, for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period, for tourism and business that does not involve paid local employment
  • Temporary residence permit: required for stays beyond 90 days or for work, study, or family reunification, applied for at the State Migration Service after arrival
  • Work visa: a D-type visa and subsequent work permit are required for any employment, arranged in advance via a Ukrainian consulate

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Check the Auswärtiges Amt's current travel warning for Ukraine before any trip — as of now it strongly advises against travel to Ukraine due to the war, and standard tourism is not realistic in most of the country
  • If travel is essential (e.g., humanitarian, journalism, official business), register with the German Embassy and follow its specific safety guidance
  • Rail and land border crossings from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, or Romania are the primary access routes, since commercial flights into Ukrainian airspace are suspended
  • Keep both digital and paper copies of all documents, since connectivity and infrastructure can be unreliable in parts of the country
  • The 90/180-day visa-free rule itself remains formally in force, but practical access is governed far more by security conditions than by visa policy
