What you need

  • Return or onward ticket, which immigration officers or airline check-in staff may ask to see
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking confirmation or host address) is occasionally requested at the border
  • No visa photo needed since no visa is issued
  • No biometrics collection for visa-free entry, though some airports (Tunis-Carthage, Enfidha) use e-Gates that capture a facial scan
  • Travel health insurance is not legally required but strongly recommended, since German statutory health insurance (GKV) coverage outside the EU is limited and private treatment in Tunisia is paid out of pocket

Visa types

  • Tourist/business entry stamp: issued free on arrival to all German passport holders, valid for a single stay of up to 120 days, multiple entries not applicable to this stamp
  • Carte de séjour (residence permit): required only if you intend to stay beyond 120 days, study, work, or establish residence; this is a local permit applied for after arrival at a regional Sûreté Nationale (interior ministry) office, not a pre-travel visa
  • Work permit: a separate authorization issued jointly by the Ministry of Social Affairs and the employer, required before any paid work in Tunisia

Entry conditions

  • German citizens may stay up to 120 days per visit without a visa, for tourism, family visits, or short business trips
  • No work of any kind is permitted on the visa-free entry stamp
  • At the border, show your passport, return/onward ticket, and (if asked) hotel booking or host's address
  • To extend beyond 120 days, apply for a carte de séjour at the local Sûreté Nationale before the 120 days expire; overstaying without applying can result in fines or an exit ban until resolved

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee, since German nationals enter visa-free
  • No processing time, as entry is granted on the spot at the border
  • If later applying for a carte de séjour, the fee is roughly 60–100 TND (about USD 20–35), with processing typically taking 2–4 weeks
  • No VFS/BLS service fee applies, since there is no visa application

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Keep a printed or digital copy of your return ticket and hotel booking in case border officers ask
  • If your stay may run past 120 days, start the carte de séjour process at least 2–3 weeks before the deadline, as Tunisian bureaucracy moves slowly
  • Land border crossings (e.g., from Algeria or Libya) can involve stricter document checks than the main airports
  • Register your stay with the German Embassy in Tunis if you plan to remain long-term, especially outside tourist areas
  • There are currently no special bilateral restrictions affecting German travelers beyond the standard 120-day rule
