Guide last updated September 10, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond arrival, with at least one blank page
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory - Sierra Leone is a yellow fever risk country)
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Two passport photos (45x45mm, white background) if applying on paper at the airport
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and photo captured at the airport immigration desk
  • Travel health insurance: recommended, not checked at the border

Visa types

  • Tourist visa on arrival: single entry, up to 30 days, extendable in-country
  • Business visa on arrival: single entry, up to 30 days, requires an invitation letter from a Sierra Leonean company
  • E-visa (optional, applied in advance via the ecitizen.gov.sl portal): single entry, up to 30 days

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Freetown Lungi International Airport
  • Present passport, yellow fever certificate, return ticket and accommodation proof at the immigration desk
  • Pay the fee in cash (USD preferred) or by card where available
  • Officers stamp the visa after a short interview, usually within 15-30 minutes
  • Pre-registering the e-visa online beforehand speeds up the airport queue since it only needs verification, not issuance

Fees & processing time

  • Visa on arrival: approximately USD 80 for a single-entry tourist visa
  • E-visa applied in advance: around USD 85-100 including a service fee, approval in 3-5 business days
  • No separate VFS/BLS service fee for on-arrival visas
  • Total cost: USD 80-100 depending on the route chosen

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Get the yellow fever vaccination at least 10 days before travel - it is checked before you can queue for the visa
  • Pre-registering online via ecitizen.gov.sl avoids the airport queue and paperwork
  • Carry exact USD cash since change is not always available
  • Common rejection reason: missing yellow fever certificate or insufficient passport validity
  • Extensions beyond 30 days are handled at the Immigration Department in Freetown
