German citizens can obtain a visa on arrival in Rwanda for tourism or business, valid for 30 days, or apply online in advance through Rwanda's immigration portal for faster processing.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry
  • Online pre-application is recommended (via Rwanda's Directorate General of Immigration portal) though visa on arrival without pre-approval is also available at Kigali International Airport for German citizens
  • Passport-style digital photo for the online form, or a physical photo if applying on paper on arrival
  • Proof of accommodation and onward/return ticket may be requested
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate required if arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission; not required when traveling directly from Germany
  • Travel health insurance recommended though not mandatory

Visa types

  • Tourist/business visa on arrival — single entry, 30 days, fee USD 50
  • East Africa Tourist Visa (shared with Kenya and Uganda) — multiple entry across all three countries, 90 days, fee USD 100, must be applied for in advance and entry point matters
  • Longer stays or work require a separate Rwandan work/residence permit applied for through the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Kigali International Airport and major land border posts
  • Steps: present your passport, complete a short arrival form if not pre-registered online, pay the USD 50 fee in cash (USD preferred) or by card where available, have your photo taken at the counter
  • Pre-applying online via the portal linked from https://www.migration.gov.rw/ shortens the airport queue since approval can be issued before travel
  • Processing at the airport counter is typically quick, around 10-15 minutes outside of peak arrival times

Fees & processing time

  • Visa on arrival fee: USD 50 for the standard single-entry 30-day visa
  • Online pre-approval (same fee) typically processed within 1-3 business days if applied before travel
  • No separate service fee when applying directly through the official government channel
  • Extensions beyond 30 days can be requested at the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration in Kigali for an additional fee, generally processed within a few business days

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Apply online in advance via the official portal when possible — it avoids cash handling and airport queues
  • Carry USD in cash as a backup in case card payment isn't available at your port of entry

  • If planning to visit Kenya or Uganda on the same trip, the East Africa Tourist Visa may be more cost-effective — but it must be arranged before the first entry into any of the three countries
