What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of your stay (a 6-month validity buffer is recommended for connecting flights)
  • No visa application forms needed for visa-exempt entry
  • Proof of onward or return travel (may be checked at airline check-in)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay (rarely checked; keep a bank statement or cash)
  • Travel/health insurance: not mandatory but strongly recommended
  • No biometrics collected on arrival for visa-exempt tourists

Visa types

  • Germans do not need a visa for tourism or business visits up to 90 days. Longer stays, work, or study require a residency category arranged through Nicaragua's Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería (DGME).
  • Tourist entry stamp: free, up to 90 days, single entry per visit
  • Business entry stamp: same conditions as tourist entry; a business letter is recommended
  • Residente Temporal: for stays over 90 days, applied for locally with DGME

Entry conditions

  • Present your passport at Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (Managua) or another official port of entry for an entry stamp
  • Tourists from Germany receive up to 90 days on entry
  • Extensions of up to 90 additional days can be requested at DGME offices in Managua before the initial period expires, for roughly USD 20-40
  • Working while on a tourist stamp is prohibited
  • Keep your entry stamp; it may be checked on departure

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for visa-exempt tourist entry
  • A tourist card fee of approximately USD 10 is usually bundled into the airfare or collected on arrival
  • Airport departure/exit tax of around USD 35 is typically included in airline tickets
  • DGME extension fee: approximately USD 20-40 depending on the number of days requested
  • No advance processing time needed, since no visa application is required

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Book flights and accommodation in advance; immigration officers occasionally ask for proof of onward travel
  • Carry a printed hotel reservation even though checks are inconsistent
  • Keep your passport valid for at least 6 months to avoid issues with connecting flights through the US or elsewhere
  • If staying longer than 90 days, start the extension process at DGME in Managua at least a week before your stamp expires
  • Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended given limited healthcare infrastructure outside Managua
