New Zealand Visa for Germany Citizens 2026

German citizens need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before flying to New Zealand, applied for online or via the mobile app and valid for multiple visits over two years.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the date of departure from New Zealand
  • Completed NZeTA application via the official mobile app or immigration.govt.nz website
  • Digital passport photo matching passport specifications
  • Credit/debit card for the NZeTA fee and the mandatory International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL)
  • Proof of onward/return ticket
  • Sufficient funds for the stay (approx NZD 1,000/month recommended, may be checked)
  • Travel/medical insurance: recommended, not mandatory for stays under 3 months

Visa types

  • NZeTA (visitor) - multiple entry, valid 2 years, allows stays of up to 3 months per visit
  • Working Holiday visa - Germany has a working holiday scheme with New Zealand for ages 18-35, applied for online separately, fee applies
  • Student visa - required for courses longer than 3 months, applied for online with an offer of place

How to apply online

  • Download the NZeTA mobile app or go to the immigration.govt.nz website
  • Enter passport details, personal information, and answer health/character declaration questions
  • Upload a digital photo if applying via the app
  • Pay the NZeTA fee (NZD 17 via app or NZD 23 via website) plus the IVL of NZD 100
  • Approval is usually issued within minutes to 72 hours and sent by email; no physical stamp or label is issued
  • Apply at least 72 hours before your flight, as boarding can be denied without an approved NZeTA

Fees & processing time

  • NZeTA fee: NZD 17 (mobile app) or NZD 23 (website)
  • International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL): NZD 100, paid together with the NZeTA
  • Processing time: instant to 72 hours (some applications are referred for manual review, taking longer)
  • No express/priority processing option

  • Apply for the NZeTA well before booking non-refundable flights, in case of referral for manual review
  • Use the mobile app for the lowest fee and fastest photo capture process
  • Common rejection reason: undeclared previous visa refusals or criminal history questions answered incorrectly
  • The NZeTA is tied to the passport used to apply - a new passport requires a new NZeTA
  • Extensions of stay beyond 3 months require a separate visitor visa application through Immigration New Zealand before the NZeTA-based stay expires
