Kenya Visa for Germany Citizens 2026

German citizens must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization via the Kenyan eCitizen portal before flying to Kenya; the eTA costs USD 34, is usually approved within 2-3 business days, and permits a single stay of up to 90 days.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry
  • Digital passport photo and scanned passport bio page uploaded with the online application
  • Return or onward ticket details
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from or having transited a yellow-fever-risk country
  • Accommodation details in Kenya
  • Biometrics (fingerprints, photo) are captured on arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or other entry points

Visa types

  • Tourist/Business eTA: single entry, valid 90 days from approval for the trip, stay up to 90 days, fee USD 34
  • Transit eTA: for layovers, reduced scope, same portal
  • East Africa Tourist Visa: a joint Kenya-Uganda-Rwanda multiple-entry visa, applied for separately, allowing travel between all three countries on one authorization
  • Work or Student permits: require a separate application through Kenyan immigration and are not covered by the tourist eTA

How to apply online

  • Apply at the official eCitizen portal (ecitizen.go.ke) at least a few days before travel
  • Steps: create an account, complete the application with passport and trip details, upload a photo and passport scan, and pay the USD 34 fee online by card
  • Processing time: typically 2-3 business days, sometimes faster; approval is sent by email as a confirmation linked to your passport
  • Present your passport, and a printed confirmation if available, at check-in and on arrival in Kenya

  • eTA fee: USD 34, paid online by credit card
  • Standard processing: 2-3 business days; apply at least a week ahead during busy travel periods to be safe
  • No separate agency service fee if applying directly through the official eCitizen portal
  • East Africa Tourist Visa, if chosen instead: a separate fee of around USD 100, with similar processing times
  • Total typical cost: USD 34 for the standard single-country eTA

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Apply well before travel - airlines can deny boarding without a valid eTA confirmation
  • Common rejection reason: photo or passport scan not matching the portal's upload requirements
  • If also visiting Uganda or Rwanda on the same trip, consider the East Africa Tourist Visa to avoid applying three times
  • Keep a digital and printed copy of the eTA approval for the whole trip
  • No current bilateral issues between Germany and Kenya affect routine tourist or business travel
