German citizens can obtain a 30-day Visa on Arrival at major Iranian airports, or apply in advance for an e-Visa authorization code via e_visa.mfa.ir; the fee for German nationals is around EUR 75, and travel insurance is mandatory.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay
  • Travel/health insurance valid in Iran - mandatory; can be purchased at the VOA desk for about EUR 15-20 if you do not already have it
  • One passport-size photo (white background) if applying at the VOA desk; not needed for the e-Visa code
  • Hotel booking confirmation and a rough itinerary
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • No fixed minimum funds requirement, but be ready to show proof of sufficient funds if asked
  • Biometrics (fingerprints, photo) are taken on arrival at passport control, not at the VOA counter

Visa types

  • Tourist Visa on Arrival: single entry, 30 days, extendable once for 15-30 days at a provincial Edareh Amaken (foreigners' affairs police) office
  • e-Visa (pre-approved authorization code): same validity as the VOA, obtained online 10-15 working days before travel, then stamped on arrival
  • Business Visa: requires a formal invitation letter from an Iranian company, single or multiple entry, around 30 days, fee varies by case
  • Transit Visa: up to 5-7 days for layovers, issued at the VOA desk for eligible nationalities

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport, Shiraz, Isfahan, Mashhad and several other international airports - not generally at land borders for German citizens
  • Steps: fill in the arrival form, present passport, photo, insurance proof and fee at the VOA desk before passport control
  • Fee for German nationals: approximately EUR 75 (payable in euros or US dollars cash; card payment is unreliable due to sanctions)
  • Processing at the desk typically takes 30-60 minutes
  • Pre-applying for the e-Visa authorization code via e_visa.mfa.ir avoids queues: submit documents online, receive a reference number by email in 10-15 working days, then present it on arrival for stamping

Fees & processing time

  • VOA fee: approximately EUR 75 for German citizens (fees are nationality-specific and set by reciprocity)
  • Mandatory travel insurance if not already held: EUR 15-20 at the airport
  • e-Visa pre-approval: no extra government fee beyond the visa fee itself, but allow 10-15 working days for the authorization code
  • Extension at a local Edareh Amaken office: a modest local fee, typically under EUR 20, processed within a day
  • Total typical cost: EUR 90-100 including insurance

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Apply for the e-Visa authorization code at least 3 weeks ahead during peak season (spring, autumn) to avoid VOA desk delays
  • Carry euro or US dollar cash - German debit and credit cards do not work in Iran because of international sanctions
  • Common rejection reason: insufficient itinerary detail or missing hotel bookings on the e-Visa application
  • A German passport with stamps from Israel can occasionally trigger extra questioning, though it is not an automatic ground for refusal for most travelers
  • Keep photocopies of your visa and insurance document separate from the originals
