What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry
  • No visa or entry form required in advance for tourist stays
  • Return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or invitation letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds if requested by the immigration officer
  • No biometrics required for short tourist visits
  • Travel health insurance is not legally required but strongly recommended given limited public healthcare access for foreigners

Visa types

  • Tourist entry stamp: free, issued on arrival for up to 90 days, single or multiple entries within the CA-4 zone (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua share one combined 90-day allowance)
  • No separate tourist visa category exists for German nationals on short visits - entry is via passport stamp only
  • Business visits of a similar short duration use the same tourist entry stamp; formal work requires a separate work permit/visa applied for through Guatemala's Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Entry conditions

  • Up to 90 days total across Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua combined (the CA-4 agreement) - crossing between these four countries does not reset the clock or require a new stamp
  • No paid work permitted under the visitor stamp
  • Officers at La Aurora International Airport (GUA) may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details
  • A one-time extension of up to 90 additional days can be requested at Guatemala's Instituto Guatemalteco de Migración before the initial period expires
  • Overstaying can result in a fine assessed on departure and possible entry difficulties on future visits

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the visa-free entry stamp
  • Extension application at the Instituto Guatemalteco de Migración: approximately GTQ 100-300 (roughly USD 13-40), processed same day or within a few working days
  • No advance processing - entry is granted on the spot at the port of entry
  • No service/agency fees apply since no visa application is needed

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Because the CA-4 90-day allowance is shared across four countries, track your cumulative days if you plan to also visit El Salvador, Honduras, or Nicaragua
  • Keep a copy of your entry stamp date - border officials elsewhere in the CA-4 zone may ask how many days you have left
  • Carry printed hotel bookings and a return ticket; spot checks are more common at land borders than at the airport
  • This is not a Schengen stay, so it does not affect your Schengen 90/180-day allowance
  • Guatemala City is the most common entry point from Germany, usually via a connection through Madrid, Amsterdam, or the US
