Cyprus Visa for Germany Citizens 2026

Visa Free

As fellow EU member states, Germany and Cyprus allow entry with just a valid ID card or passport under EU freedom of movement - no visa is required, even though Cyprus is not yet part of the Schengen Area.

Guide last updated September 8, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • A valid German national ID card or passport - either is accepted, since Cyprus recognizes EU ID documents
  • No minimum validity period required beyond the document's own expiry
  • No visa, entry form, or advance registration required for tourism or short visits
  • Proof of accommodation and return travel is not required at the border but useful to carry
  • Travel health insurance is not mandatory, but an EHIC or German public insurance is recommended
  • No biometric enrollment needed for EU citizens
  • Cyprus is an EU member but outside the Schengen Area, so a passport control check (though not a visa check) still occurs at the border

Visa types

  • No visa exists for Germans visiting Cyprus, since they travel under EU free movement rights. For longer stays:
  • Temporary Residence Registration - required for stays over 90 days for work, study, or family reasons, applied for at the Civil Registry and Migration Department
  • No work permit is needed, as EU citizens can work in Cyprus without restriction
  • Most Germans staying briefly for tourism or business need no paperwork beyond their ID or passport.

Entry conditions

  • Unlimited short-term stays are allowed for EU citizens; the 90/180-day rule that applies to non-EU Schengen visitors does not apply here
  • For stays over 3 months, registration with the Civil Registry and Migration Department (Aliens and Immigration Unit) is required, though lightly enforced for short-term visitors
  • Full right to work, study, and access public services without a separate permit
  • Travel to the northern part of Cyprus involves a separate, informal border-crossing process, though it typically does not affect Germans significantly beyond a basic passport check

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for entry, since no visa is required
  • Temporary residence registration, if needed for long stays, has a modest administrative fee, generally processed within a few weeks
  • Total cost for a standard visit: EUR 0

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Bring your ID card or passport for the passport control check at Larnaca or Paphos airports, since Cyprus is outside Schengen and still checks documents
  • Carry an EHIC or equivalent for any medical needs during your stay
  • If crossing to the northern part of the island, carry your passport rather than only an ID card, as it simplifies the crossing
  • Long-term residents should register with the Migration Department early to access local services smoothly
  • Cyprus uses the Euro, so no exchange is necessary
