German citizens can visit Colombia visa-free for tourism or business for up to 90 days, extendable once for a combined maximum of 180 days per year, with entry granted directly at passport control.

What you need

  • Passport valid for the duration of the stay
  • No visa application needed for stays up to 90 days
  • Proof of onward or return ticket, occasionally requested by airlines
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or host address)
  • Proof of sufficient funds is rarely checked but keep a bank card or statement available
  • No mandatory travel health insurance, though recommended and sometimes requested for extended stays
  • Digital arrival registration via the Check-Mig form must be completed online within 72 hours before arrival
  • Fingerprints/photo captured at immigration kiosks for most arrivals

Visa types

  • Most German tourists and business visitors need no visa at all. For other purposes, arranged through the Colombian consulate in Germany or online via the Visas e Migración Colombia portal:
  • Visitor Visa (V) - covers business, extended tourism, and volunteering, validity up to 3 years with stays capped per entry
  • Migrant Visa (M) - for work, investment, or family ties, valid 1-3 years
  • Resident Visa (R) - for long-term settlement after qualifying time on an M visa
  • Tourists arriving visa-free can request an in-country extension rather than needing a new visa type.

Entry conditions

  • Initial stay granted: up to 90 days, decided by the immigration officer at entry (can be less)
  • One extension of up to 90 additional days can be requested at a Migración Colombia office, for a combined maximum of 180 days within a 365-day period
  • Tourists may not work or receive Colombian income
  • Complete the Check-Mig online form within the 72 hours before your flight - airlines can deny boarding without it
  • Overstaying incurs escalating fines, roughly starting around COP 189,000 per day up to a cap, plus possible entry bans

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the visa-free entry or the Check-Mig registration
  • Extension of stay: approximately COP 230,000-260,000 (roughly EUR 45-55), processed same day to a few days at a Migración Colombia office
  • No embassy or VFS visit required for a standard tourist trip
  • Total cost for a 90-day visit: EUR 0 aside from optional extension fees

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Complete the Check-Mig form as close to departure as possible (within the 72-hour window) - forgetting it is a common boarding issue
  • Bring a printed or digital copy of your hotel booking for the first nights
  • If planning to stay near the 90-day mark, start the extension process at a Migración Colombia office at least a week before expiry
  • Repeated short exits and re-entries to reset your stay can raise scrutiny from immigration officers
  • Register any change of address if staying with a host for more than a few nights
