German passport holders can enter mainland China visa-free for tourism, business, or transit for up to 30 days under China's unilateral visa-exemption policy for EU citizens, which is renewed periodically.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond entry (6 months recommended by many airlines)
  • No visa or online application required for stays up to 30 days under the unilateral exemption
  • Return or onward flight ticket to show at check-in and immigration
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or address of host) may be requested
  • Completed arrival card or online customs/health declaration
  • Fingerprints and a photo are collected for most foreign arrivals at Chinese immigration (ages 14-70)
  • Travel health insurance is not mandatory but recommended, especially for winter sports regions or rural travel

Visa types

  • For stays over 30 days, or for work, study, or journalism, a visa must be obtained in advance from the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) in Germany:
  • L (Tourist) visa - single or multiple entry, up to 90 days validity for a single trip
  • M (Business) visa - for trade and business activity, often multiple entry
  • Z (Work) visa - requires a work permit and invitation from a Chinese employer
  • X1/X2 (Student) visa - for study over/under 180 days
  • Germans qualifying for the 30-day exemption should still hold one of these visas if their trip's purpose or length falls outside tourism/business/transit limits.

Entry conditions

  • Maximum stay: 30 consecutive days per entry under the exemption
  • Permitted purposes: tourism, business meetings, family visits, transit - not paid work or long-term study
  • Multiple entries are allowed, but each stay is capped at 30 days
  • Hong Kong and Macau operate separate immigration policies with their own, generally more generous, visa-free terms for Germans
  • Registration with local police is required within 24 hours if staying somewhere other than a hotel (hotels handle this automatically at check-in)
  • The exemption is a rolling government policy renewed periodically - confirm it is still in force close to your travel date on the Chinese embassy website

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee for entries covered by the unilateral exemption
  • If a visa is still needed (e.g., stays over 30 days): standard L visa fee is around EUR 45-60, plus a CVASC service fee of around EUR 15-30
  • Standard visa processing time: 4 working days; express (2-3 days) and rush (next day) options cost extra
  • Total cost for a visa-required trip: roughly EUR 60-100 including service fees

Tips for Germany travelers

  • Double-check the exemption's current end date before booking, since it is renewed in blocks rather than being permanent
  • Complete the required customs/health declaration before landing to speed up immigration
  • Keep a digital and paper copy of your hotel booking - it is sometimes checked on arrival
  • Common rejection reasons when a visa is required: incomplete invitation letters, mismatched itinerary dates, and insufficient bank statements
