United States Visa for France Citizens 2026

e-Visa / eTA

French citizens traveling under the Visa Waiver Program need an approved ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) before flying to the United States, valid for stays up to 90 days.

Guide last updated September 24, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport that is a valid e-passport (with an electronic chip) issued after the relevant VWP requirement date, valid for the duration of the stay
  • Approved ESTA authorization linked to your passport before boarding any carrier to the US
  • Proof of onward or return travel, generally required by the airline before boarding
  • No physical photo or biometric submission needed for ESTA, but fingerprints and a photo are taken by US Customs and Border Protection on arrival
  • Travel health insurance is strongly recommended since the US has no free public healthcare and medical costs are very high
  • A valid credit/debit card to pay the ESTA fee online

Visa types

  • ESTA (Visa Waiver Program): covers tourism, business visits, and transit, valid for 2 years or until passport expiry, multiple entries, each stay up to 90 days
  • B1/B2 visitor visa: required instead of ESTA if ineligible for the Visa Waiver Program (e.g., prior immigration violations, certain travel history to countries like Iran, Cuba, Syria, Sudan, North Korea after 2011), involves an in-person interview at the US Embassy in Paris
  • Work, study, or longer-stay visas (H, L, F, J categories, etc.) require separate sponsor-based applications and are not covered by ESTA

How to apply online

  • Apply at the official site esta.cbp.dhs.gov (beware of unofficial lookalike sites that overcharge)
  • Complete the form with passport, travel, and background/eligibility questions
  • Pay the fee online by card
  • Most approvals are issued within minutes, but CBP recommends applying at least 72 hours before travel in case of delays or a need for further review
  • Approval is stored electronically against your passport; no physical stamp or document is issued, though you can print the confirmation for your records

Fees & processing time

  • ESTA fee: USD 21 (paid online directly to the US government)
  • Standard processing: often within minutes, officially up to 72 hours
  • No official expedited service; delays beyond 72 hours may indicate the application needs manual review or was denied
  • If ESTA is denied, applicants must instead apply for a B1/B2 visa at the US Embassy in Paris, which carries a separate MRV application fee (USD 185) and requires an interview appointment

Tips for France travelers

  • Apply for your ESTA as soon as you book your flight, not the day before departure, since a small percentage of applications require extra processing time
  • Answer the eligibility questions (criminal history, certain travel history, health conditions) accurately, since inconsistencies can trigger denial and require a full visa interview instead
  • An approved ESTA does not guarantee entry; the final decision is made by a CBP officer at the port of entry
  • Carry proof of onward travel and sufficient funds, since these are commonly checked at US ports of entry for VWP travelers
