What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry, with at least one blank page
  • Completed visa application (paper form at the border, or the online form if pre-applying)
  • 1 recent passport photo (recommended to carry, though not always strictly enforced at the border)
  • Proof of onward/return ticket
  • Proof of accommodation for your stay
  • Evidence of sufficient funds, particularly if asked at immigration
  • Biometrics: fingerprints and photo taken at the port of entry
  • Travel health insurance: recommended; yellow fever certificate required if arriving from a country with risk of transmission

Visa types

  • Single-entry tourist visa: valid for use within 90 days of issue, stay up to 90 days, USD 50
  • Multiple-entry tourist visa: for repeated visits within a set period, USD 100
  • Transit visa: for short stopovers, USD 30, shorter validity
  • Business visa: requires an invitation letter, USD 250, best applied for online in advance

Visa on arrival

  • Available at Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam), Kilimanjaro International Airport, Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (Zanzibar), and major land/sea borders
  • Steps: complete the arrival visa form, present passport and photo, pay the fee, then proceed to biometric capture
  • Fee accepted in USD cash (exact change recommended); some ports also accept payment by card
  • Queue times vary by arrival volume — arriving on a busy flight can mean a 30-60 minute wait
  • Applying online in advance via the eservices.immigration.go.tz portal can speed up arrival processing by pre-clearing the application

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: USD 50 for a single-entry tourist visa (cash or card at the border)
  • No separate VFS/BLS service fee for the on-arrival route
  • Total estimated cost: USD 50 for most tourist visits
  • Processing at the border: typically 20-60 minutes depending on queue
  • Online pre-application (a few days ahead) can reduce time spent at the airport counter

Tips for Tanzania travelers

  • Consider applying online a few days before departure to speed up airport processing
  • Common delay reasons at the border: not having exact USD cash, missing proof of accommodation, or unclear travel purpose
  • Direct on-arrival application is straightforward for most French travelers; the online portal is the closest equivalent to a VFS/BLS process
  • Carry a yellow fever certificate if you have recently transited through an at-risk country, as this is checked on entry
  • Extensions can be requested at immigration offices in Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar before the visa expires
