Guide last updated September 23, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry
  • No advance application or form for the standard 30-day entry
  • Return or onward ticket recommended
  • Proof of accommodation recommended
  • No photo required in advance
  • Biometrics: photo and fingerprints captured at the border as part of Rwanda's standard entry procedure
  • Travel health insurance: not mandatory but recommended; a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from a yellow-fever-endemic country

Visa types

  • Free entry permit (Tourist): granted automatically at the border under Rwanda's open-visa policy, single entry, valid for a stay of up to 30 days
  • East Africa Tourist Visa: a separate multiple-entry visa covering Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda, applied for online in advance if visiting all three countries
  • Business/work permits: require sponsorship and are arranged in advance through Rwanda's Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration

Entry conditions

  • Free entry granted for up to 30 days for tourism or business meetings
  • No paid employment permitted on this entry
  • On arrival at Kigali International Airport or a land border, present your passport; the entry permit is issued on the spot at no cost
  • Extensions beyond 30 days can be requested online via Rwanda's Irembo portal or at an immigration office before the initial period expires

Fees & processing time

  • No fee for the standard 30-day entry
  • No service fee
  • Total cost estimate: RWF/EUR 0 for entry itself
  • Processing time: immediate at the border
  • No express option needed since entry is automatic

Tips for France travelers

  • Carry your yellow fever certificate if connecting through or arriving from an endemic country, as this is checked
  • Common issues: assuming a visa application is required — it is not, for stays up to 30 days
  • If planning to also visit Kenya and Uganda, consider the East Africa Tourist Visa instead of separate entries
  • Check France Diplomatie advisories for regional guidance
  • Extensions are handled through Rwanda's Irembo online portal — apply before your 30 days expire
