Norway Visa for France Citizens 2026

Visa Free

French citizens travel to Norway visa-free with a national ID card or passport under the EEA/Schengen free movement agreement - no visa, no time limit on stay, and no border formality for short visits.

Guide last updated September 23, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • A valid French national identity card or passport - no minimum remaining validity required
  • No visa, entry form or proof of funds required at the border
  • No biometrics or photo requirement for entry
  • The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) covers necessary medical care while visiting

Visa types

  • Not applicable - Norway is part of the European Economic Area (EEA) and the Schengen Area, so French/EU citizens have a free movement right of entry, residence and work with no visa category needed

Entry conditions

  • No limit on length of stay for EEA citizens - you may live, work, study or holiday indefinitely
  • If staying and working or studying in Norway beyond 3 months, you must register with the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) and obtain a registration certificate (registreringsbevis), which is free
  • No work permit is required to take up employment as an EEA citizen
  • Most Schengen internal borders (e.g. arriving by land or ferry from Sweden) have no routine passport checks, though Norway sometimes carries out spot ID checks

Fees & processing time

  • No visa fee, no application and no processing time - entry is immediate
  • UDI registration for stays over 3 months is free and usually completed online plus a short in-person appointment

Tips for France travelers

  • Carry your ID card or passport at all times, including on domestic flights and ferries within Norway
  • If relocating for work, register with UDI promptly and apply for a Norwegian ID number (fødselsnummer/D-nummer) needed for banking and payroll
  • Norway uses NOK (kroner), not euros, despite being in the Schengen/EEA zone
  • EHIC covers emergency care, but anyone actually residing in Norway should arrange local health coverage through the national insurance scheme
